![]() ![]() ![]() In this poem Lovelace compares her sister’s funeral to her mother’s, but where my interpretation was changed was all centered around the mother’s funeral. I wonder now if I can truly understand Lovelace’s intention behind certain poems, but for me that’s the beauty of all poetry it can be personal and real, yet still be interpreted in different ways. This is my second time reading her collection, and I feel like some poems gained new meaning from the second read through. She shares about her abuse, eating disorder, relationships, family, loss, love, and so much more. It’s really hard for me to pick one theme to focus on in this collection, because Lovelace gives so much to her readers. What is most inspiring about this whole collection, is how it seems the poetry is Lovelace’s catharsis. She isn’t afraid to tell her truth and her story, and because of this she does put a trigger warning in the beginning of the book. ![]() You go on a journey of Amanda Lovelace’s life, as you see her grow from the princess (young girl), to the damsel (the teen and young adult years), to the queen (who she has become). What I loved most about the collection of poems in the princess saves herself in this one, is they feel like you are reading someone’s diary. Lovelace is an incredible talent, who doesn’t hold back anything. “here lie/ the raw,/ unpolished,/ & mostly/ disjointed/pieces of/ my soul” – Amanda Lovelace ![]()
